I hear this most days form new clients who reach out to me. For most people anxiety has become a way of life, a HABIT.

Our system can become overloaded with excess sensory input from our environment; the more stressed we feel, the more sensitive our senses become, and so our stress response is triggered some more. In a heightened state, we can become all-consumed by our thoughts, our worries escalating into feelings of anxiety, especially when there is no real threat or danger. Before we know it, we can spiral downwards, and what started as a natural and healthy stress response, soon feels like a deep hole that we struggle to get out of.
This was certainly my experience.
I was crippled with anxiety to the point that I was too afraid to go out. On the occasions that I did, I’d be looking over my shoulder in fear that someone would hurl abuse at me or attack me, or I’d have to pull over in my car as the first signs of a panic attack started to bubble to the surface. You may say these fears were irrational and completely unfounded, and indeed to anyone on the outside they certainly looked that way. But to me they were real. It was my reality.
